National Vocational Qualifications

NVQ Programmes offered by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) through Change Consultancy & Training Ltd, are designed for candidates in a managerial position who can demonstrate competence in certain managerial criteria in the workplace.

'Competence' is a way of describing skills and performance at work, and the criteria are based on National Standards for management which describe best practice management.

Available NVQs :
Certificate in Skills Training in the Workplace
Certificate in Training and Presenting in the Workplace
Learning and Development NVQ Level 4
NVQ in Management Level 3
NVQ in Management Level 4
NVQ in Management Level 5

Achieving an NVQ demonstrates that you are a competent manager, and that you possess transferable and flexible skills and knowledge.

An NVQ Programme is a "can do" qualification: that is, the programme of study comprises lists of activities that a competent manager can do, and can prove that they can do. The focus is therefore on performance in the workplace - a 'competency'-based approach. Achieving your NVQ is based on the preparation and submission of evidence that you can and do regularly fulfill certain criteria according to nationally agreed standards. We will explain these to you and help you every step of the way during your Programme.

The essence of the Programmes is more about what a manager can do and less on theoretical knowledge. You will improve in your own work role as you learn.

NVQ Programmes are MODULAR so that you may enrol for the full qualification, or simply choose specific units that are relevant to you. For successful completion of any one unit, you will be awarded an NVQ Unit Certificate by the Institute of Management Foundation.

The NVQ basics:

All NVQ's are based on the same structure:
  • Key Roles - a major function of your job, eg: Managing People
  • Units - part of a key role, eg: Recruiting
  • Elements - a section within a unit, eg: Selection Procedures

Elements are split up further into performance criteria, but we offer considerable detailed guidance on all of the above, to help you understand what you will be asked to do in order to achieve your NVQ.

Assessment for NVQ's works in stages. Firstly, your Assessor will look at the work you have submitted and rive you feedback. Occasionally, your Assessor will pass your work to an Internal Verifier (IV), who will check that you have been assessed fairly and appropriately. The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) requires that each training and development provider that is registered as an Approved Centre, has an IV, whose role it is to ensure that assignments and the marking of them is fair and consistent. When you have completed your work, the final step is for the IV to sample your work and sign you off. An External Verifier (EV) is employed by the (CMI) as a quality controller to make sure that all Internal Verifiers meet all of the (CMI) standards, all of the time. Verification is best seen as a quality assurance process that all awarding bodies adhere to.
